Tools discovered in China are being considered the oldest hint of human lineage outside Africa. The age of these tools is reported to be around 160,000 to 146,000 years, and it is unclear which human ancestor may have created them. The findings in China are part of a larger reevaluation of the human family tree, with other recent discoveries in the region and in Africa also shedding new light on human history.
