researchers have found that the aff-1 exoplasmic fusogen plays a necessary role in endocytic scission and seamless tube elongation. disruption of a related protein, rab-5, may increase the availability of a similar fusogen, eff-1, at the cell surface. this increase in eff-1 fusogen availability is associated with enhanced regenerative axonal fusion capacity in neurons.
