A species of butterfly has been found to have the most chromosomes of any animal, with reports suggesting it has either 458 chromosomes or 229 chromosome pairs. The butterfly in question is described as tiny and has been identified as the atlas blue butterfly in some reports. The discovery has reportedly stunned scientists and expanded knowledge of genome fragmentation in insects.
