Scientists are using earthquake forensics and satellite data to study subduction and better understand earthquake risks. A recent study involving a mega-tsunami crossing the Pacific may be changing the understanding of these risks, although the extent and implications of the findings are not entirely clear. The research appears to be challenging existing knowledge of the geologic history of certain regions, potentially including North America.
