Researchers are studying the complexity of earthquake ruptures to explain variations in seismic activity. Different factors, including dynamic restrengthening, fault heterogeneity, and fracture energy, are being considered to understand the underlying mechanisms. The use of machine learning and physics-based models is also being explored to improve observations and characterization of earthquake ruptures.
