A new neural stimulator has been developed that is inserted into the body in a rigid state but becomes flexible once inside. The technology is intended for use in neural interfaces and may have applications in brain-computer interface systems and deep brain stimulation. Details of the design and material strategies used to achieve this switchable flexibility are being explored in various research studies.
