Research is being conducted on the use of cryo-FIB milling and other techniques for structural cell biology, including the preparation of biological lamellae for electron cryotomography. The goal of this work appears to be the determination of high-resolution structures in situ, with applications in fields such as histopathology and the study of cellular ultrastructure. Various methods, including plasma FIB milling and cryo-electron tomography, are being explored and optimized for this purpose.
