Polity & Governance
NITI Aayog
The Union government’s policy think tank, which replaced the Planning Commission. It is an executive body created by a Cabinet resolution — not a constitutional or statutory one — and it advises rather than allocates: unlike its predecessor it has no power to hand out funds to States.

The statutory regulator that enforces competition law in India, established under the Competition Act. It prohibits anti-competitive agreements and abuse of dominant position, and clears or blocks mergers and acquisitions above prescribed thresholds.

The Union legislature, consisting of the President and two Houses — the Lok Sabha (House of the People) and the Rajya Sabha (Council of States). A Bill becomes an Act after passage by both Houses and assent by the President; Money Bills can originate only in the Lok Sabha.

A body constituted periodically by the Union government to review and recommend changes to the pay, allowances and pension structure of central government employees. Its recommendations are advisory; the government decides what to accept, and States often frame their own revisions afterwards.

The Union government’s nodal agency for communicating its policy decisions and programmes to the press. Because its releases are primary government sources rather than reporting about them, they are the preferred citation for scheme and Cabinet-decision questions.

Reserve Bank of India (RBI)
India’s central bank and the regulator of the banking system. It is a statutory body established under the Reserve Bank of India Act, issues currency, manages foreign exchange reserves, and sets monetary policy against an inflation target agreed with the Union government.
2 stories publishedForeign Institutional Investor (FII / FPI)
An institution registered outside India that invests in Indian financial assets — equities and debt — without seeking a controlling stake. This portfolio route is distinguished from Foreign Direct Investment, which takes a lasting management interest, and portfolio flows are the more volatile of the two.

Index of Industrial Production (IIP)
A monthly index that measures the volume of production across Indian industry — mining, manufacturing and electricity — relative to a chosen base year. It tracks how much is being made, not what it sells for, so it is a volume measure rather than a value one.
1 story publishedIndex of Core Industries (ICI)
An index tracking output across the core infrastructure industries — among them coal, crude oil, natural gas, refinery products, fertilisers, steel, cement and electricity. Because these feed the rest of industry, the index is treated as a leading signal for the IIP.
