Retail inflation measured by the Consumer Price Index rose to a 20-month high of 4.8% in August, driven mainly by rising food prices. Economists said the sharper-than-expected increase raises the likelihood that the Reserve Bank of India will hike the policy rate at its October review, marking a shift away from the recent easing cycle towards a tighter monetary stance.
The HinduIndia and New Zealand ratified their Free Trade Agreement, which will enter into force on October 20. Under the deal, New Zealand will remove tariffs on all goods imported from India, while India will remove or reduce tariffs on 95% of its current imports from New Zealand. The agreement aims to double bilateral trade, with India's dairy and sensitive agricultural sectors kept protected, the Commerce Minister said.
The HinduS&P Global Ratings raised India's growth forecast for FY27 to 7%, up from its earlier 6.6% estimate. The agency attributed the upgrade to robust industrial activity, healthy consumption, strong goods exports and accelerating government investment, which pushed June-quarter growth above expectations. S&P also indicated the Reserve Bank of India may deliver a rate hike, aligning with other agencies' recent upward revisions to India's growth outlook.
