In a development that could lead to elections in the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir, the Election Commission of India on Thursday wrote to the Chief Electoral Officers of polling states and union territories asking them to complete a special summary revision of electoral rolls by August 20.
Citing sources, the Indian Express reported that the Election Commission sent letters to the chief executives of states, including Haryana, Jharkhand, Maharashtra and Jammu and Kashmir, on Thursday to begin the process of updating the electoral rolls. The final electoral rolls will be published as scheduled by August 20, while the deadline for voter registration in these states and union territories is July 1, the newspaper said, citing Election Commission sources.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Jammu and Kashmir was his first since the new NDA government came to power at the Centre.
He added that the day is not far off when the people of Jammu and Kashmir will vote for a new government and “soon Jammu and Kashmir will once again build a better future as a state.”
The prime minister has previously spoken about restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir and holding state assembly elections. Speaking to news agency PTI ahead of this year’s Lok Sabha elections, Modi said his government was committed to restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir and was working towards that goal.
“Restoring statehood is a solemn promise we have made and we will abide by it. We are working hard to create the right conditions for it to happen expeditiously,” he told PTI.
Jammu and Kashmir was bifurcated into two union territories in 2019 and lost its special status.
